Our volunteers have been working to compile our most frequently asked questions. This is the second post in the series.
Frequently Asked Questions: FAQ about TCO's Program
TCO Volunteers
Q: Who/What is The Cloth Option (TCO)?
A: The Cloth Option (TCO) provides free loans of reusable cloth diapers for families and caregivers of children experiencing diaper need. TCO is a 100% volunteer operated, donations based, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. You can read more about our Mission and Values here.
Q: Does TCO provide disposable diapers, wipes, or formula?
A: TCO only provides reusable cloth diapers, which are made of fabric and can be washed and reused. We do not provide disposable (single use) diapers or wipes, or other baby items such as clothing, formula, or furniture.
Q: How much does TCO’s program cost?
A: Our program is completely free! We accept monetary donations to help cover the cost of shipping your cloth diaper package, but this is 100% optional. Our average shipping cost is $10.
Q: Where is TCO located? Can I come in person?
A: TCO does not have a physical location. We are operated entirely by volunteers throughout the US. You can see where each of our volunteers is based, as well our donation drop off locations here.
Q: How many cloth diapers do you provide?
A: Approved families receive a starting cloth diaper stash, which is enough cloth diapers changes for full time use with daily washing. Newborns receive 20 cloth diaper changes, infants 15 changes, and potty training toddlers 10 changes.
Q: Can I keep the cloth diapers I receive from TCO?
A: You are welcome to use the cloth diapers from TCO for as long as you have a child in diapers. When you no longer need them, please contact TCO to return the cloth diaper loan. Please do not sell, trade, or give away the items you receive from TCO.
Q: Are the cloth diapers TCO distributes used or new?
A: Cloth diapers distributed by TCO can be new or preloved; what we have available to distribute depends on our donations. All used items are sanitized according to approved guidelines. We carefully inspect all preloved items to make sure that they are in great condition before being distributed.
Q: Do you provide wipes?
A: If available inventory allows it, we will provide reusable cloth wipes as a part of your cloth diaper package. Because availability depends on local inventory, we cannot always include wipes. If your package did not include wipes, we recommend either using baby washcloths, or making your own wipes if you are able. We do not provide single use wipes.
Q: Do you provide adult diapers?
A: TCO’s program is geared toward children using diapers, and the upper range of the diapers we provide is 55 pounds. We are unable to provide reusable cloth diapers beyond that size limit, or to adults.
Q: My insurance company gave me your information to help with formula based on information they saw online. Can I get formula from TCO?
A: We do not provide baby formula. If our program was found on FindHelp.org, we are categorized under “Diapers and Formula,” even though we only provide reusable cloth diapers.
Q: What other resources do you have? Where can I get things for my baby that aren’t cloth diaper related?
A: TCO is not a resource organization, although our local volunteers may be able to direct you to resources in your area that they know of. We suggest that you find local or online organizations or support groups, which may be able to help connect you with additional assistance.
